How To Recognize Genetically Modified Food In Supermarkets And Markets?

When you buy fruit and vegetable, can you differentiate between which food is organic and which is GMO? GMO food is more beautiful, with stronger colors, without damage – with perfect look. However, is the difference so obvious?

Some people tested the food without knowing if the sample they tried is GMO or natural. Find out how they assessed the products which they tried and if they noticed whether it is GMO or not.

Jason Calton, nutritionist who studied in Harvard and Yale, is coauthor of the book “Rich food, poor food”, with his wife Mira. He pointed out the danger advising that we keep to the organic, fresh products or those which are grown locally, and to avoid GMO products. Remember that the industrially received milk, meat and fish often originate from animals feed with GMO soybeans or corn.

Although GMO products are not marked Caltons says that there is a trick for recognizing this food. Look on the number of the stickers on the products, which is called PLU (Product Lookup Number). If PLU is four digit number which starts on 3 or 4, this means that the product is not GMO, but it was made on the farm on which were used chemicals and pesticides.

If the number of the stickers has 5 digits which start with 9, this means that the product is organic, produced without chemicals, pesticides, i.e. genetically modified.

“You can buy these products with clear conscience”, says Calton.

But, the products marked with 5 digit number which starts with 8 are genetically modified.

“They are unnatural”.

Because of the fact that GMO products are widely spread and they are usually not marked, it is almost impossible not to avoid them. However, this fruit and vegetable is rarely genetically modified: garlic, pineapple, pea, mango, asparagus, eggplant, kiwi, cabbage, sweet potato, watermelons and mushrooms.

The following products have bigger chances to become GMO: apples, celery, peppers, peaches, strawberries, grape, spinach, cucumbers, blueberries, potatoes, green beans, kale, oranges, corn, zucchini, cherry and hot peppers.

GMO food is mainly more beautiful, round and shiny, the products are with equal size, without damage and little rotten.

The natural vegetable is different, as well as we are not equally high, fat or thin.

We suggest you buy irregular fruit and vegetable which looks ugly.

It is very important that the fruit and vegetable have different colors and shapes. It does not matter if the fruit or vegetable is hit somewhere or little rotten, because that means that it is live and natural.

On the shelves where this fruit or vegetable is found, there are small chances to have GMO products.
